With the recent advancement in technology, one can avail of different video transport services depending on his needs and concerns. As such, it is better to have an understanding on the technicalities of this area to be able to address and find what suits best among the different applications.
MPEG and IP Transport are two different things. MPEG is more concerned of video and audio storage, transmission, and
compression. On the other hand, IP focuses on the transmission of data from one point to another, sending packets from the source host to the destination host. MPEG transport is intended to broadcast videos while IP is utilized to send data.
MPEG and IP are both in layer 2 while QAM (Quadrature amplitude modulation) is in layer 1. QAM is a scheme of both analog and digital modulation. MPEG is responsive with QAM while IP doesn’t. Other layers don’t have any impact to IP, it just continues to perform on its own regardless of what is going on in the other layers.
IP is widely used in different gadgets such as laptops, iPads, iPhones, PCs and the likes. MPEG transport is getting the entire signal from the established digital cable set-up while the IP is acquiring it from the aforementioned devices. Different data can be sent thru IP but not with MPEG. However, IP cannot be considered mature enough and ready to totally replace what the MPEG transport is actually providing. Certain rules and even laws (i.e. Title 6 of FCC’s Commission Act) must be reviewed and checked before a transition from MPEG transport to IP can be made. If this law will be amended, it will be a bit easier for the transition to take place.
Different technologies are designed to address different needs of the target customers and clients. From here, people can choose which ones they find more convenient, fast, reliable and affordable.
Any change, especially in technology, must be carefully examined since this will have an impact on how things are being done. Everything must be studied carefully to see what are the possible effects, its pros and cons, and its effects to the people concerned.
The best thing to do is to find ways on how we can continuously advance with the technology while looking for means to make things more cost effective and efficient, getting connection and access to what we need but with accordance to the law - having fair rights to get information and at the same time responsibly handling such data.
It is indeed interesting to look forward on the upcoming changes technology can bring us as this can make our life easier and more advanced.
